It gives me immense pleasure to welcome you to the official website of the Directorate of Unani Services, Uttar Pradesh, functioning under the Department of AYUSH, Government of Uttar Pradesh.
The Unani System of Medicine is one of the world's oldest and most time-tested systems of healthcare. Originating from the teachings of ancient Greek scholars and further developed by renowned Arab and Persian physicians, Unani medicine is based on a holistic approach that emphasizes the preservation of health, prevention of disease, and treatment through the restoration of the body's natural balance. With its rich heritage, scientific principles, and patient-centered approach, Unani medicine continues to play a significant role in promoting health and well-being across India.
Uttar Pradesh occupies a distinguished position in the field of Unani medicine and AYUSH healthcare. The Government of Uttar Pradesh, through the Department of AYUSH and the Directorate of Unani Services, remains committed to strengthening healthcare infrastructure, enhancing educational opportunities, promoting research, and expanding access to quality healthcare services for all sections of society.
A major strength of the State's Unani healthcare system is its robust network of government hospitals, dispensaries, educational institutions, and specialized healthcare facilities that provide affordable and accessible healthcare services to millions of citizens. Continuous efforts are being made to modernize these institutions, improve patient care, strengthen human resources, and integrate technology-driven solutions for efficient healthcare delivery.
Uttar Pradesh is proud to be home to two premier Government Unani Medical Colleges—State Takmeel-ut-Tib College & Hospital, Lucknow and Government Unani Medical College & Hospital, Prayagraj. These institutions represent the highest standards of Unani medical education and have produced generations of distinguished physicians, teachers, researchers, and healthcare administrators who have contributed significantly to the advancement of Unani medicine in India and abroad.
Both colleges offer undergraduate education in the Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery (BUMS) programme with an annual intake capacity of 75 students each, thereby making a substantial contribution to the development of qualified Unani medical professionals in the country. These institutions combine academic excellence with extensive clinical exposure, ensuring that graduates are well-equipped to meet contemporary healthcare challenges while preserving the principles and philosophy of Unani medicine.
One of the most remarkable achievements of Uttar Pradesh in the field of Unani education is the availability of Postgraduate (MD Unani) programmes in all fourteen recognized Unani specialties, with a total annual intake capacity of 70 postgraduate scholars. This distinction places Uttar Pradesh in a unique position in India, as it hosts the only Government Unani Medical College in the country offering postgraduate education across all recognized Unani disciplines under one institution. This unparalleled academic infrastructure has enabled the State to become a national leader in advanced Unani education, specialist training, and research.
The Government of Uttar Pradesh has consistently worked towards strengthening AYUSH systems through infrastructure development, faculty enhancement, modernization of educational institutions, promotion of evidence-based research, implementation of national health programmes, and expansion of healthcare services. Special attention has been given to improving educational quality, ensuring the availability of quality medicines, encouraging innovation, and promoting preventive and promotive healthcare through AYUSH interventions.
In recent years, the AYUSH sector in Uttar Pradesh has witnessed significant growth through the establishment of integrated healthcare services, public health outreach programmes, yoga and wellness initiatives, digital governance measures, and collaborative efforts aimed at achieving universal health coverage. These initiatives reflect the State Government's commitment to preserving India's traditional systems of medicine while ensuring their relevance in modern healthcare.
I extend my sincere gratitude to all stakeholders, healthcare professionals, academicians, researchers, and citizens who continue to contribute to the advancement of Unani medicine and AYUSH in Uttar Pradesh. Together, we shall continue our journey towards building a healthier society through accessible, affordable, and holistic healthcare for all.
With best wishes,
(Prof. Jamal Akhtar)
